Identifying this type of athlete may assist in avoiding high risk talent (i.e., first round busts, “coach killers,” etc.)
Because intelligence is a stable trait, when you use the AIQ you are comparing “apples to apples” (Athlete X’s AIQ to Athlete Y’s AIQ) unlike comparing knowledge, which is comparing “apples to oranges” (i.e., What Athlete X learned at his university vs. what Athlete Y learned at his university may be very different)
Compared to other measured traits, AIQ can provide you information that is not effected by the level of talent the athlete has competed with and against. For example, one’s intelligence will not be altered if they played for and/or against BCS or non-BCS schools.
Where personality inventories are subjective and can be influenced by the context of the administration (such as the combine), the AIQ is an objective measure assessing a stable trait. Therefore, the AIQ is robust against inadvertent influences.
